Breaking Silence 4Culture

Definitive Gaze
In this legislative session, 4Culture is facing a very drastic cut (a budget from $15,000,000 down to $1,500,000). This will substantially cripple 4Culture’s ability to support local artists in Seattle and King County.

You may be wondering “why should I care?” You should care because it is the arts, it is culture that binds communities; that gives support not just to one voice, one community but to many. It is funding for the arts and artists *here* that allows this region to be an engine for creativity and innovation, allowing local artists to give this region a stronger ability to produce works here rather than reducing us to consumers of work from NYC and L.A. rather than wondering “why isn’t anything cool/relevant/new/exciting/enriching happening here?” The answer is because the venues are closed. Because new blood cannot get a start. Because our artists have been forced to work small than to produce works writ large.

“What’s in it for my community?” Everything. Because a youth alienated from his culture, from promoting a vibrant community of identity and ideas is an isolated youth and I believe that an isolated youth is an angry youth. An angry youth may become a lost youth that may take years to find their way back, if at all. It is support from 4Culture that has supported the Northwest African American Museum, the Wing Luke Asian Art Museum, Duwamish Tribal Services, the Nordic Heritage Museum and many more. If you think that funding for 4Culture supports an urban “elite” that produces work you don’t see and wouldn’t relate to, think again. It is support from 4Culture that gives *all* communities a voice.

For all my friends reading this, I urge all of you to write your representative BEFORE March 11th to support 4Culture. Write, email, call, do all three. Write the representatives that voted against 4Culture. I specifically urge you to write a hardcopy letter, as it is visible volume that can make the difference. It is a small moment of your time to invest, but you, your community will get so much more in return.

Thank you,

Here is a handy email template:

Dear (Senator or Representative) XLAST NAMEX,

(if your representative voted yes) XXXXAs a constituent living in your district, I am writing today to thank you for your support for legislation that continues funding for arts and heritage in King County through King County lodging taxes.XX

(if your representative voted no) XXXXAs a constituent living in your district, I am writing today to urge you to support legislation that continues funding for arts and heritage in King County through King County lodging taxes.XX

Add personal example of how your organization/self is served by 4Culture and what the loss of 4Culture would mean to you (see examples below or write your own)

The agency 4Culture has stewarded lodging taxes for cultural programs in King County for over 20 years. If a bill is not passed this year to secure their funding, they will begin planning to cut programs and services as early as January 2011. XXXX Personal note here about how this would have a negative impact on you, your organization, your family, etcXX.

Sincerely,

Oldest LOLcat Found

Definitive Gaze

"This captioned cat picture postcard was found by Tracy Angulo in a Seattle antique store. Tracy tells us that the photograph is from 1905, which would make this officially the oldest cat picture with a caption, AKA lolcat, that we’ve seen.

The differences are clear. Proper grammar and a more formal tone was in vogue back then. But the similarities to modern-day kitten struggles and lolcats are amazing. ALL CAPS is still cool, but most importantly, she also no can has cheezburger. More than a hundred years later, all that’s changed is the spelling.

Evekitteh, we hope you got a good dinner."

Being that it's from Seattle, I think that this might be one of Meow Meow's great ancestors. The patiently impatient face, and proper grammar implies a strong connection.

YES.

Struggling Lower-Class Still Unsure How Best To Fuck Selves With Vote
October 30, 2008 | Issue 44•44

WASHINGTON—As election day nears, millions of the nation's poorest voters have reportedly yet to settle on the most profound and enduring way to completely fuck themselves over when they head to the polls this year.

"On the one hand, I'm pretty sure Barack Obama will undermine my best interests by maintaining the same centrist, pro-corporate policies of previous Democratic administrations," said Jim Estey, 34, a recently laid-off assembly-line worker. "Conversely, I agree with McCain and Palin on abortion, which might just balance out the fact that they'll further marginalize people like me by supporting deregulation and slashing social programs. So it's pretty much a toss-up at this point."

Though such behavior appears to directly undermine their own well-being, lower-income voters have historically supported candidates determined to screw them six ways to Sunday, including Bill Clinton, who incarcerated them in record numbers and cut the welfare benefits many depended on for day-to-day sustenance, and George W. Bush, who widened the gap between them and the rich and sent thousands of them to die in Iraq. This year's election is reportedly unique in that the nation's poor must not only weigh how deeply and painfully their chosen candidate will penetrate their rectums, but must also consider unforeseen outside circumstances—such as economic collapse and terrorism—that might allow the next president to bend them over and brutally rape them in ways they never thought possible.

The latest polls indicate that a majority of lower-class citizens might choose not to vote at all Nov. 4, preferring instead to leave the details of how they get fucked to the moneyed classes.

The Russian invasion of Georgia has not changed the balance of power in Eurasia. It simply announced that the balance of power had already shifted. The United States has been absorbed in its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as potential conflict with Iran and a destabilizing situation in Pakistan. It has no strategic ground forces in reserve and is in no position to intervene on the Russian periphery. This, as we have argued, has opened a window of opportunity for the Russians to reassert their influence in the former Soviet sphere. Moscow did not have to concern itself with the potential response of the United States or Europe; hence, the invasion did not shift the balance of power. The balance of power had already shifted, and it was up to the Russians when to make this public. They did that Aug. 8.
